Researchers and academics

The English Association brings together individuals with a wealth of experience, knowledge and passion for English. We foster discussions of teaching methods, and we drive forward positive and meaningful change by responding to national consultations, carrying out research exploring the state of our discipline, and working with government and policy-makers.

The Association also has a dedicated Higher Education Committee, which works to promote English (speaking, listening, reading, writing and multi-modal communication), as well as linked, research-informed pedagogies. The Committee also curates high quality resources and acts as a forum for sharing best practice.

The more involvement you have, the brighter the future looks for English Studies; not only for you and your career, but for all English-related disciplines. Membership of the EA is an ideal way to become involved and to make your voice heard. Members can also join our Higher Education Committee to make a major contribution to the English Association, and to English education as a whole. In return, you’ll be given access to unique opportunities to network, and to influence the development of Higher Education research and activity.

We provide a forum for the discussion of practice and principles in the teaching and learning of English at all levels, and membership provides the opportunity to network with colleagues and leading practitioners. You also receive membership of your local Regional Group when you join the EA.

In addition, the EA runs an annual programme of events, including networking events, where you can connect with academics and researchers from across the UK and internationally, sharing ideas and discussing the latest research and best practice. We also offer subject-specific events and run the English: Shared Futures conference every two years.

All members have access to our curated collection of high-quality teaching resources. Our publications offer a forum for sharing best practice and exploring research-informed pedagogies. Our publications include English, our journal providing a forum for people who think hard and passionately about literature, and who want to communicate those thoughts to a wide audience, our two Year’s Work… journals, which provide a qualitative narrative bibliographical review of scholarly work on English language and on literatures written in English, and Essays & Studies, our series of annual, themed volumes, edited each year by a distinguished academic.
