All our committees report to the Board of Trustees. Each is tasked with oversight of a different part of the EA’s work.

The Education Committees work to support and defend the discipline of English by addressing topical developments, responding to national consultations, liaising with other organisations, and organising events. The three Committees focus on different stages of education, with cross-representation to ensure a unified voice.

Our work in secondary and further education is driven by the Secondary and Further Education Committee, working alongside our other Education Committees. Members of the SFEC bring a mix of expertise and experience from across the discipline, including teachers, heads of department, librarians, teacher-trainers, assessment specialists and freelance education consultants.

The SFEC meets six times a year to:

• Respond to consultations on national education policy
• Represent the voice of teachers in schools, sixth forms, and colleges
• Work to increase uptake of English at A Level and in higher education
• Provide opportunities for teachers to develop their subject knowledge
• Organise conferences and events for teachers and other working in education
• Advise the Poetry By Heart consortium on the development and delivery of the national poetry recitation competition
• Participate in the Common English Forum, which meets regularly with the Department for Education
• Liaise with other subject associations to promote and defend English studies
• Act as the editorial board for the EA’s secondary and FE journal, The Use of English
