Written and illustrated by James Mayhew Otter-Barry Books Ltd ISBN 9781913074036 £16.99
This is a beautiful book with sumptuous illustrations. It features six celebrated stories that have inspired great music -The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, The Swan of Tuonela, The Flight of the Bumblebee, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Scheherazade and William Tell. Mayhew recreates the moods of each tale and their music with colouring, motifs and different techniques such as collage. I love the water and the sorcerer, the swan in her blue landscape, the Russian clothing and the city domes, the trolls in the underground cave, and the stunning world of the Sultan. Sections of musical notation form part of the pictures. This magical book is perfect for the creative curriculum celebrating and blending storytelling, art, music and cultures. There are musical notes from the author at the end of the book. James also recommends recordings of each piece which is helpful to teachers. A rich resource, and a treat!
