This is a modest selection of Greek myths retold for young readers (aged 5-12). Its sixteen chapters are grouped into three themes: The Earth, the Heavens and the Underworld (e.g. Orpheus, Phaethon); Monsters and Heroes (e.g. The Minotaur, Perseus); and Gods and Mortals (e.g. Pan, Midas, Arachne). The selection is a judicious one, and the avoidance of some of the more well known and convoluted narratives (e.g. Troy, Jason, Odysseus) has resulted in self-contained chapters of modest length which should be easily and rapidly digestible by its intended readership. The English is well pitched and sensitively written, and some of the myths’ more gruesome aspects are tactfully passed over. It is a delightful read which hopefully will whet young readers’ appetites and encourage them to explore further the wealth of entertaining material to be found in classical mythology.
