One of a trio of board books for very young children (Your Places including Your Island and Your Farm) Your Forest has all the qualities of Jon Klassen’s stylised and entrancing images – the sun rising, trees, a cabin, rocks, a friendly forest ghost, a stream and a bridge. After a shy sunrise, each of the images is on the right hand side of the double pages then at the page turn they are moved to the left so that gradually a picture is built of the cabin set amongst trees with rocks, the ghost, the river and the bridge. Accompanying this rhythmic movement the repetitive words ‘This is your sun… These are your trees…’ have a soothing effect so that at the end, when the sun goes down on the warm tones of the forest and all is left in darkness the forest is asleep so that readers can go to sleep too, ‘and think about what you will do tomorrow’. What a wonderful book to read with children from two upwards as they settle down, feeling safe and comfortable with something to look forward to when they wake.
