Greg Jenner has the knack of communicating history in a humorous, popular way that is perfectly suited to young children. This book is funny and exciting. The approach is informal but Greg and expert Egyptologist Dr Campbell Price ensure there is plenty of information. The book is easy to read. A variety of formats including comments in the margin, illustrations with captions, a time line, fact files, accuracy alarms, and a historian head-to-head ensure that we are entertained. Rikin Parekh’s illustrations are hilarious.
We imagine we are among Egyptians and “experience every twist and turn of the ancient world with them!” We learn about the Nile, meet odd gods, see how pyramids were constructed, and encounter famine, floods, fights and failure. We are told how to make a mummy, look at an Egyptian dream house and learn about different people. We travel through different periods of Egyptian history, learn how Egyptians measured time, encounter hieroglyphs and meet some key Egyptians. There is a chapter on medicine, we examine a pharoah’s murder, meet the Persians, cat mummies, Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, the Rosetta Stone and Tut’s Tomb. Learn as you laugh your way through this entertaining book. A perfect introduction to Ancient Egypt, Children will love it – I did!
