In Tiger Walk we are given the perfect example of how great art can provide stepping off points for children’s creativity and imagination. After seeing Rousseau’s well known Surprised! painting of a tiger in a tropical storm, Tom is inspired to make his own tiger drawing, which that night comes to life and takes him on a magical adventure. The tiger allays all Tom’s fears as they meet them, eventually coming back home where Tom falls contentedly asleep. There are echoes of The Tiger Who Came to Tea, The Snowman and Where the Wild Things are in this delightful and reassuring tale which is beautifully illustrated. This is a worthy addition to any bookshelf and will no doubt merit many re-readings.
