Over the past five years, the English Association has mapped the continuing impact of the Covid pandemic on the discipline, as well as seeking to understand the impact of other new developments such as AI. The ensuing publications include the special edition of Issues in English on Covid-19 in 2020, a report in 2022, a report in 2024, and a report in 2025.
In the wake of the ‘contraction’ of the discipline over the past several years, we are widening the remit of the questionnaire to members of University English and the Institute of English Studies in the School of Advanced Study. We would value your input, and we invite you to complete our short survey by the end of August. Your responses will not only allow for an important ‘snapshot’ of the study of English in 2026, but also enable us to plan ahead and shape our campaigning and advocacy work.
All your responses will be confidential. This process is about amassing and responding to helpful data in relation to the discipline as a whole rather than individual departments. We will publish a summary of the responses on our websites in due course, compiled by Professor Antony Rowland. Since we are looking for general information rather than an extended discursive response, we are only asking for a sentence or two each in reply to the questions within the survey.
