This is one of the clearest books I have seen on the Arctic and Antarctic for children. From the first page with the globe and the paw of the polar bear and the foot of the penguin it is full of knowledge and explanation. It is a true exploration of two of the most endangered parts of our globe due to climate change.
Double page spreads on Exploration and Survival, The Antarctic Ice Shelves, Arctic Islands and Shrinking Sea Ice lead into who lives in the Arctic Circle and their way of life with double pages on food and homes, including life at the Antarctica Research Stations. A double page spread on Pollution and research also highlights the problems faced. Wildlife, both in the water, sky and on land take up six double page spreads. Plants found and their survival take up another three double pages. A true adventure for children and adults studying these two very important areas on our Earth.
The useful Glossary at the end gives the reader a reference for the explanation of words they meet in the book. This book should be in all schools, homes and libraries. It is a book for children of all ages due to the superb illustrations but the reading age is KS2 and KS3. With climate change an issue that the young have very much taken to their hearts in the UK, this book about the Arctic and Antarctica, educates them about two of the most vulnerable regions on Earth.
