An excellent large format book that attracts and engages readers. We learn about how the Olympics and Paralympics began and are introduced to all the sports. There are seven sections – Having a Ball, Taking Aim, Fighting Fit, Splashing Around, Pushing the Limits, Making a Racket and Riding High. The double-page spreads are amusing and appealing with a good balance between text and illustration. There is an explanation of what the sport is, such as Archery is “using a bow, you shoot arrows at a far-away target. It is basically playing Robin Hood without hiding in the trees.” There is usually a bit of the history of the sport, the rules, upsides and downsides of the sport, plus the skills needed, and best ever moments. The downside of Fencing is “the equipment is expensive and everyone will constantly ask you if they can “have a quick go with your sword”. The upside of Shooting – “Hitting the bullseye in any sport is a great feeling. In shooting, you will hit loads of bullseyes, plus you get to dress like a cyborg.” I particularly enjoyed the “Sound Like a Pro” section which gives phrases that will impress others such as in Water Polo a “donut” is a goal scored over the goalie’s head and through their outstretched arms.” There are guides to your chances of becoming a champion, and injuries associated with the sport. In Hockey “Injuries to the hand and forearm are common because they are closest to the sticks. All the leaning down can also put pressure on your back.” I like this approach. In addition to giving information, (often with humour), it is interactive in that the reader can gauge their suitability for each sport. It also helps to compare the sports. Lively colourful artwork brightens each page. At the back of the book there is a section that considers some of the sports that might be included in the future along with a Glossary and a comprehensive index.
Appealing and accessible, this is a superb book. Five stars.
