Christmas by the sea at Lyme Regis sounds idyllic but George isn’t convinced. Time with his dad will be great and grandad will be great, and he’s looking forward to Uncle Edwin’s arrival from the States, but sharing a house with his step-cousin Isla? That’s a different matter. Little does George know that this will be the least of his problems. Amidst a blizzard whilst everyone’s hands are full of Christmas decorations, a body washes up on Lyme beach. George wonders if there is a connection with the strange light he saw falling earlier, a light that fell swiftly from the nearby cliffs. Could it have been a torch? Could the torch have been held by a person? And what is the meaning of the second light, the one that was close to the first but vanished? When George and Isla decide to investigate they find themselves on a trail which leads them to the site of an archaeological dig and an ancient treasure. It’s a trail which is, increasingly, fraught with dangers. Someone desperately wants to stop George and Isla from uncovering the truth, and will stop at nothing to prevent them. . . As snow settles over Lyme, a deadly chase begins. A middle-grade mystery story suitable for readers 9+, I enjoyed the intrigue and the chilly setting by the sea. With a range of suspects on offer, the story kept me guessing.
