Iceberg by Clare Saxby Illustrated by Jess Racklyeft, Allen & Unwin ISBN 9781760526047 £11.99
This picture/reading book is a record of the life cycle of an iceberg. It charts its development as it cracks away from the Antarctic glacier in spring through summer and winter until the following spring. Each double page shows the interaction of the iceberg with the ocean and the wildlife in the ocean and the air. A book not only about an iceberg but life in the sea, air and on land as the Antarctic year develops. The middle double page has flaps to open to show how whales, seals and penguins feed on krill and fish in Summer. Then we learn about Autumn and Summer in Antarctica. Finally there is a page on the Global Warming effect on Antarctica and why the area deserves protection. This is an important reference book as well as a KS1, (aged 4 – 7), book for children to read. As the back cover says ‘ A stunning, lyrical portrayal of the life cycle of an iceberg.’
