Please use the following guidelines when submitting your book requests to the Year’s Work team. For ease of access, we recommend that you save this URL in your favourites, or bookmark it in your preferred browser, for later use.
Book Request Form
Complete as many of the fields in the form as possible. Some of the fields are required and have an asterisk to indicate this, including Your Name, Email, Title, Publisher, etc.
If you have the author(s) name, please include both the forename and surname.
Double check that your email is correct when you input it as the form will automatically email you a copy of your request.
Please input the full title of the text you are requesting, including determiners like “The” or “A” at the beginning.
When filling in the ISBN field, we ask that you input the hardcover ISBN 13 regardless of whether you are requesting a hardcopy or an electronic copy. This is the ISBN we use when logging requests into our database to prevent duplicate requests being processed. In the event that there isn’t a hardcover ISBN, then please supply the paperback ISBN 13. Do be aware that there is a character limit on the ISBN field, so please do not include any spaces or hyphens.
There is no need to input your address on the form unless:
- You are a new contributor, and this is your first order
- You wish to notify the team of a change of address. Please clearly indicate that your address has changed, and please also email us to inform us directly of this change.
Use the Further Information field to supply further information about your request. For example, if the title you are requesting is from a smaller/independent publisher, then please provide the publisher’s website address if possible.
When you submit your request, you will get a pop up informing you of a successful submission. You will also receive an email with the details of your request included – we recommend keeping a copy of this filed away to keep track of what you have requested and when.
Please note, that publishers do not always inform us if a title requested has been approved for review or dispatched.
Office Procedures
Each request arrives as an email in our book request inbox for processing before being logged in our book request database to keep track of what titles have been requested and by whom.
Please be aware that publishers will not send out multiple copies of a single title to the same journal, so, unless we have a PDF copy of the title on file, we will be unable to fulfil requests that have been previously processed for another contributor.
You will be notified in the following circumstances:
- When your request has been passed along to the publisher
- If the publisher has responded to your request
- If another reviewer has previously requested the book
If you haven’t heard about your request from the EA, or if an approved request doesn’t arrive within 10 weeks, please re-submit the form as before and tick ‘Yes’ when asked if this is a repeat request.
If you require a title with some urgency (for example, there is an immediate deadline), then we recommend asking for an electronic copy as these can be sent out by publishers much quicker.
Digital Copy Policies
Some publishers have now implemented policies which mean that they will only provide digital copies for review except for accessibility reasons. The main one that has implemented these policies is Springer/Palgrave Macmillan.
If you do require a paper copy of a book that is published by them, we suggest that you try to source one from a colleague or library. You can find libraries that stock certain titles near you by using the free WorldCat search tool.
