Who doesn’t like thinking and talking about food? After all, it’s a need we all share, so this up-to-date book from an experienced and well regarded author and illustrator team would be ideal for classes aged 5-8 to explore. The contents page lists topics of real interest to youngsters: what plants and animals need, what constitutes a balanced diet, how food gets to us, food waste, is there enough food for all? And are there alternatives? Each topic has a double page spread with straightforward, accessible paragraphs of information surrounded by colourful, cartoon-style illustrations, characters and animals (some with amusing placards) expressing opinions, along with an alien who poses some challenging questions. Equally the pages provide hard-hitting information on ‘factory farming’, the use of chemicals in food production, food miles, food poverty and the effects of climate change. Amidst the harsh messages, children are informed and empowered to think about what choices they might make to deal with some of these issues and they will certainly love considering food alternatives such as bugs and seaweed! A great class read-aloud non-fiction book as well as being perfect for small group discussion work.
