It can be a daunting experience with a new text whether you’re an ECT or you’ve been teaching for years. Join author and storyteller Margaret Bateson Hill, Trust English lead Suzanne Hughes and reading for pleasure consultant Becci Smith as they discuss and demonstrate how to approach reading aloud in the primary classroom from pre-reading to performance.

Becci Smith is a primary-school teacher, reading for pleasure consultant, creative arts practitioner and the children’s event programmer for Stratford Literary Festival. She previously worked as the Learning and Participation Manager for The Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival and managed the national Reading Teachers = Reading Pupils programme.
Suzanne Hughes is a teacher first and foremost! After working in various roles for Northampton Primary Academy Trust, from class teacher to English Lead and Deputy Head, she is now the Trust English Lead for the NPAT Education Team. Suzanne is also the Trust’s Royal Shakespeare Company Associate School’s Lead; a delivery partner for the National Professional Qualification for Leading Literacy as well as being a Visiting Fellow of Voice 21.
Margaret Bateson-Hill is an author and a storyteller. She has published both picture and fiction books, including the prizewinning Masha and the Firebird (English 4-11 Awards, Keystage 2 Fiction). Margaret started her storytelling career with Lambeth Libraries, taking books into early years settings. She is continually out working with books and stories with all age groups, visiting schools, libraries, museums and even royal palaces, from Brixton to Beijing. She is one of the team behind Stepping into Stories, the Herne Hill Kids Lit Festival.
