A welcome revision of an outstanding volume. This really is a book about everything. It is an excellent introduction to the history of the world. Christopher Lloyd takes us on an entertaining journey across decades, cultures and continents beginning 540 million years ago and moving through historical periods ending with “To be Continued – where we are now and what might be coming next”.. The book is divided into 15 sections. Each starts with a timeline of important dates and then we are presented with information, explanations, diagrams, illustrations, photographs, graphics, cartoons and quotes from scientists and historians. The book moves at a fast pace. Information is clearly presented and often humorous. Lloyd also encourages his readers to think, make connections, broaden their horizons and find out more. He ends on a note of hope “Throughout all history, even when things have looked very grim, humans have adapted and survived.” At the end of the book there is a world map, a comprehensive index and glossary and notes from the author. Lloyd says his “goal has always been to tell this story in a way that is accessible, interesting, accurate and balanced for young readers – and adults too.” He has certainly achieved his aim. Perfect for curious children, the book informs, inspires and entertains. Bravo!
